Citizens United for Transparency today called on local governments to strengthen transparency in land-use and permitting decisions, so that communities can trust the process regardless of how any single decision turns out.
Permitting is where national debates become local reality — and where the public record is often hardest to access. Staff analyses go unpublished, appeal filings are difficult to obtain, and residents are left guessing about who is influencing a decision and why. Trust in the outcome depends on trust in the process.
“People will accept a decision they disagree with far more readily when they can see it was made fairly and in the open,” the organization said. “Transparency in permitting isn’t about any one project. It’s about the legitimacy of local government itself.”
The organization encourages cities and counties to adopt the following as standard practice:
- Prompt, good-faith compliance with public-records requests, with clear timelines and minimal fees.
- Publication of staff analyses, appeal filings, and key correspondence on a project’s public page.
- Clear conflict-of-interest disclosure for officials involved in the decision.
- Disclosure of major funding behind organized advocacy — for a project or against it — that participates in the proceeding.
Citizens United for Transparency takes no position here on any specific permit. Its concern is the integrity of the process: open records and open decisions protect residents, applicants, and officials alike, and they make every outcome easier to defend and easier to accept.
